From Evidence to Awareness: Communicating Air Pollution Risks

From Evidence to Awareness: Communicating Air Pollution Risks

On July 4, 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) organized a one-day workshop in Tbilisi for healthcare workers on "Air Pollution and Risk Communication." The event is part of a four-year project aimed at improving air quality and protecting public health in Georgia.

ACT Global representatives Natia Rukhadze and Ketevan Antadze participated in the meeting. Ketevan Antadze presented the key findings of a WHO-supported study on behavioral and cultural insights regarding air quality to the attendees.

The study showed that public information about air pollution remains limited, though both public interest and need are high, especially concerning children, people with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and primary healthcare professionals.

The recent developments show that air quality is no longer just an environmental issue - it is an integral part of health, daily safety, and a better quality of life. According to WHO estimates, 99% of the global population lives in areas with polluted air. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen and sulfur oxides, and other toxic compounds are linked to the development of cardiovascular, respiratory, oncological, and neurodegenerative diseases. In Georgia's large urban areas and industrial zones, challenges related to air quality are particularly pressing, as pollution levels are high and primarily tied to an outdated vehicle fleet, low fuel quality, poorly regulated industrial emissions, the construction industry, and a lack of green spaces.

We believe that evidence-based knowledge and properly planned communication will help both healthcare workers and the public better assess risks and make more informed decisions to protect their own health and the health of others.
